Day 23. Salt Lake City to Ogden, Utah.  Ogden was not a Mormon but a fur trapper who came through here before Brigham Young and his church. We spent the morning on Antilope Island in the Great Salt Lake. We had to drive over a long causeway and got to the island just as a thunderstorm with lightning passed over. We stayed in the visitors center till the storm passed and then drove down the island. Lots of birds and a few buffalo. The lake salt content is about 5X ocwater to 35X in one bay. Tomorrow we will go to some local museums and see some of Ogden.
60 % of Utah residents are Mormon although only 40% are practicing. Salt Lake City is about 35% with rural areas having high numbers.

  1. I'm reading a book right now that says you're in one of the happiest places in the country. Mormons report higher happiness levels than any other group. Other evidence also suggests extremely high use of anti-depressants. Hmm?? In the Mormon culture there is a strong pressure to say you're happy and squash any feelings suggesting otherwise. (From what I'm reading anyway).

  2. Very interesting about the Mormon population. I remember going to a school with a boy who was Mormon but I don't think I've heard of any Mormon students at the school where Liam and Kellen attended. The boy I went to school with could not participate in any celebrations, including birthdays. Must have been tough.
