Now in Winslow AZ, after a 60-mile drive east from Flagstaff.
On the way, we stopped at the ruins of Two Guns, a town that had been located on old Route 66.  There are numerous stone buildings in various states of disrepair still present.  Even a historic old road bridge over the Diablo Canyon river that ran through the town. It's an interesting place because it's just out there, alongside the interstate, with no supervision.  Anyone can explore the ruins as much as they want.
From Two Guns we drove on to Winslow, the town made famous by The Eagles in their song, Take it Easy.  They even have a "Standin' on the corner" statue for visitors (lIke us) to photograph.  I've always LOVED The Eagles and especially that song!
We are now at the world famous La Posada Hotel, adjacent to the Santa Fe RR tracks.  The place is a magnificent renovation of a hotel built in 1930.  "Magnificent" is an understatement.  The sprawling old hotel houses a museum, galleries, 5-star restaurant and even an old-timey Amtrak station.  It's amazing.  We had a sensational lunch in the restaurant.  Best hamburger and Caesar salad ever!!
Next we explored the town.  Very interesting shops and The Eagles are everywhere!
Here's Alice's quote of the day...
As we passed an unusual road-kill animal on the interstate shoulder, I said, I wonder what kind of animal that was.  Without a second's hesitation Alice said..."It was someone's lapdog that got blown out of the car!"   Seriously.  And she might have been right!
We're down to 5,000 feet now and the breathing is easier.
Tomorrow we head to Chinle AZ, near Canyon de Chelle, an old favorite of ours going back to dating days.

  1. My comment may have come from watching a middle aged blond with lots of plastic surgery with a lap dog dressed like a Mexican dancer including a feathered hat at Old Tucson. She was sitting at a table kissing it over and over and ignoring her husband who must have been used to it. Ugg! It was probably a desert jackrabbit.

  2. Look up the hotel online if you want to learn more about it's history and all the famous people who have stayed here.
