159 miles today from Windslow to Chinle, AZ, all through desolate desert. We are on the Navaho Reservation now and back to MST, 2 hours earlier than home. It was hard to leave La Posada! We started the day by taking our coffee out to watch the east bound Amtrak arrive right at the hotel front door, drop off 6 or 8 passengers and take off in about 5 minutes. We then had a delicious breakfast at the hotel before heading out. Half our driving was interstate, the rest 2 lane through sand hills and dry rugged country.
We stopped at the Hubbell Trading Post that has been in continuous service since 1887. Hubbell owned many trading posts and did direct business with outlets in NYC and LA. This place was his first one. The buildings are all preserved by the park service but the trading post in handled by Navahos, very friendly and knowledgeable.
We finally got to Chinle and had lunch at the Thunderbird Lodge cafeteria that serves local food. Pete had a Navaho taco made with fry read and I had a tasty  stewed beef with rice. We are now cooling down in our Best Western hotel. Tomorrow we will visit Canyon de Chelly, one of our favorite spots.

  1. Your meals seem much improved from the microwave meals and stale bagels form earlier.
